HPE Midline Hard Drives are ideal for Bulk Storage Applications

HPE Midline Hard Drives are ideal for Bulk Storage Applications

Posted by Michael Ramirez on 24th Jun 2022

When it comes to data storage, the need to acquire hardware that keeps up with the increasing storage demand in our current time is essential. With programs becoming more data-driven and storage-hungry, there will be a need to meet current storage demands that can easily be exceeded. And when these storage demands are exceeded, your ability to procure more drives for storage might be hampered by the growing cost of storage devices such as solid state drives (SSDs). Maybe these drives don’t feature nearly as much storage as an HPE midline drive, which means you will have to purchase more drives for storage. Luckily for those who might be looking for bulk storage options, HPE features many midline storage devices that feature a great increase in storage.

HPE Midline Hard Drives

When it comes to data warehousing, many bulk storage options exist, which include 8TB, 10TB, 12TB, 14TB and 16TB midline hard drives. These large storage capacity drives allow you to store vast amounts of data at a pretty low cost and do not come with a big decrease in performance. Typically, more data-intensive storage devices such as solid state drives are very costly and come with a decent amount of storage. Most solid state drives with a storage capacity of 2TB or higher can easily cost thousands of dollars. Although they are more for business critical workloads, HPE midline hard drives offer a great incentive for storage applications focusing not only on storing vast amounts of data, but operating at a tight budget as well. When it comes to pure performance such as storage drives with higher read/write IOPs, it can come as a cost for storage. Typically, a higher storage means a storage device that can store vast amounts of data, but isn’t really as fast as other drives or at least more efficient.

The beauty of HPE Enterprise server Midline hard drives is the fact that your server configuration won’t see a decrease in performance. HPE server Midline hard drives feature not only a larger storage capacity, but data transfer rates up to 12G. And with most Midline hard drives having SmartCarrier trays, most are backwards compatible with Gen8 and Gen9 HPE ProLiant servers. This means you can easily purchase a Gen10 midline hard drive and easily add the drive to any Gen8 or Gen9 server as long as you have the correct firmware.

When it comes to storing a vast amount of data, the need to secure critical information is essential to your business. Often times, firmware could be downloaded from sources that are bundled with malicious code and luckily, most HPE Midline hard drives are encrypted with genuine HPE Digitally Signed Firmware. Digitally Signed Firmware provides an additional layer of security for your data, ensuring all drive firmware is downloaded only from trusted sources.

So, can you tell if your drive is encrypted with digitally signed firmware? All hard drives will either have a firmware sticker or the firmware printed on the drive label. Drives with digitally signed firmware will have a sticker that displays “DSFW” which means digitally signed firmware.

As you can see from the drive label above, under the bar code is text that displays “DSFW: HPD2” which means the drive is encrypted with digitally signed firmware. Some hard drives will have a separate sticker on the drive label that displays the digitally signed firmware; others like the hard drive above, will have the correct firmware printed on the drive label itself.

HPE SmartCarrier trays will always display the spare part number on the part sticker and sometimes will display “DS” which is an abbreviation for “digitally signed”. Also displayed on the part sticker are the specs of the drive, which does not include the data transfer rate. Most part stickers might display “DS” so it is a good idea to always check the firmware sticker on the drive label to ensure you are purchasing a genuine HPE hard drive with Digitally Signed firmware and not a 3 rd party drive. Most Gen10 HPE Enterprise midline hard drives are encrypted with digitally signed firmware and luckily are backwards compatible with most Gen8 and Gen9 HPE ProLiant servers due to the HPE SmartCarrier tray.

HPE Midline server hard drives confer a great deal of advantages and features that make them ideal for your server workloads. The ability to store a far greater amount of data ideally serves storage applications such as data warehousing and cloud computing. And HPE midline hard drives easily meet the criteria that are optimal for any application that prioritizes storage. So, what are some examples of products that easily meet these demands?

When it comes to purchasing server hardware such as storage devices (SSDs or HDDs), depending on the packaging, you will either see a drive with a spare part number or main part numbers. Drives like the HPE 10TB SAS 12G hard drive will usually have several part numbers such as a spare part number, assembly part number, manufacturer part number, and a model number. Usually when purchasing a factory sealed drive, you will see the spare part number which ends with a “-001” on the drive label that is on the factory sealed packaging. The factory sealed box displays the general specs of the hard drive as well.

As you can see from above, the part number displays “857965-001” which is the spare part number to the HPE 10TB SAS 12G. Having part numbers allows you to easily search for drives that best fit your applications. Drives like the 857965-001 is ideal for bulk storage due not only due to its enormous 10TB storage capacity, but also that the drives’ firmware is digitally signed which means your data will be protected.

In some cases, as in the drive above, the spare part number will not end with the “-001” but you can see that the factory sealed packaging will contain the full spare part number “856965-001”. Now, if you purchase drives in new retail packaging, you will see the manufacturer part number (with -B21 at the end) on the drive label. The manufacturer part number will not appear on the drives’ part sticker. It only appears on the drive label in the New Retail packaging.
